If you are looking for a realistic form of training whether it is for fun, self-defense or competition than you may be interested in one of the following, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Muay Thai, Boxing, Kickboxing, Karate or Judo.

Let’s check out a few of the styles mentioned above and see what makes them unique and effective forms of fighting. (If you’re looking for a Martial Arts School in the Port Jefferson, New York area, check out http://www.fusionkickboxing.com/mixed-martial-arts.html)

Jiu Jitsu, also known as Brazilian JiuJitsu (BJJ), or Jujitsu, is an art based on grappling moves. Using an attackers strength against themselves to apply joint locks, choke holds and throws, this style of training offers the practitioner many options when dealing with an opponent. Applying a joint lock (such as an armbar or leg lock) with just enough pressure causes pain, which may be all you need to calm a person down and restrain them. In the case that your attacker does not submit, you have the option of breaking the arm, shoulder or leg, disabling your attacker and leaving you free to continue your attack or escape. Choke holds allow you a much more deadly option, holding onto a choke hold too long can cause a person to pass out or more serious lasting injury including death. However, a properly held choke will cause your attacker to simply fall asleep allowing you to escape quickly or restrain them until the proper authorities can be called.

Muay Thai training, also known as “Thai Boxing” is a form of kickboxing. Developed in Thailand, it is also called “the Science of 8 Limbs.” Practitioners learn to strike with the hands, feet, knees, legs and elbows (and even the head!) to create a well rounded striker. There is a great emphasis on fighting from the clinch position, learning to strike while someone is grabbing you is very important martial skill to learn for self defense training.

Karate is a Japanese style of martial art that we also practice in our Port Jeff Station dojo. Karate teaches strong, linear punches, learning to develop a tremendous amount of power in each punch.
